  • THE “BIG EASY” COMES TO OKLAHOMA

I realize that Fat Tuesday is still over a week away, but my motto is “it’s never too early to have a party” so my wife and I hosted a Mardi Gras bash at our home on Saturday Night.

The hurricanes were plentiful so I don’t remember a lot about the party, but fortunately photos were taken to document the festivities (All photos after the fifth hurricane have been edited out due to incriminating content).

    Appropriate attire was required

After stuffing our faces with assorted traditional New Orleans dishes (ok…I realize that chocolate fondue is not one of them)…

…we sent the women folk into the kitchen to cut the King Cake.

Damn, that one is really cute!

    We finished stuffing our faces

And Bobby got the piece with the baby in it. Bobby is in the Navy and will be shipping out this summer, so apparently, we will be having the next Fat Tuesday party in Iraq.

We retired to the living room to play “Mad Gab”. If you’ve not played this game, it’s a lot of fun. I do suggest, however, the addition of copious amounts of alcohol because the resulting slurred speech makes the game much, much, funnier.

I don’t really recall what was happening at this point, but apparently my wife is giving me a wedgie (and enjoying it!)

Finally, never hand your camera over to a bunch of drunk guys and tell them to take pictures, because when you look at those pictures later, you will find shots like these:

We had a great time with our early Mardi Gras celebration in our warm, cozy house; but it would be good for all of us to remember that many of the Katrina victims are still living out of shelters and hotels, and that many folks who once lived in the Big Easy have little to celebrate and may never get to go “home” again.

  • I absolutely LOVE King Cake!! The cream cheese kind is the best! YUM!! It looks like you all had a wonderful time. I love the pictures. Yes, it’s great to remember all of the people still struggling down there. My niece FINALLY got her stuff (what she had left that she had re-accumulated) and came home from Gulf Port.  She lost EVERYTHING….her home, her belongings, her vehicles and her pets……when it was all over I think even the whole tragedy caused the breakup of her and her longtime boyfriend. I suppose we will NEVER know what all is going through their minds because of this. It’s just so sad. Thanks for sharing your fun party with us.

  • you all don’t have enough beads.

  • I saw some recent photos from Mardi Gras – I think you had a bigger crowd at your house.  Great pics !!

  • Dude, the contents of your V8 bottle… it looks like blood.

  • You look great, Dad! I hadn’t seen the recent results. :)

Looks like you had a great time. What are you giving up for Lent? ;)

  • Looks like a great party! Loved the pics, especially the ‘wedgie face’.

  • What I want to know is, what did you have to do to earn those beads?

  • Oh man, you made me miss Louisiana and Mardi Gras parties with our friends.  We just moved back from LA about a year ago and we still have friends that are displaced. We went out to do some relief efforts and to see friends in October.  It was pretty overwhelming.  I fear that it will be a very long time before New Orleans is how I remembered it, if ever.

  • Looks like a fun party.  I think I’d be afraid to be in New Orleans at Mardi Gras.  Guess that proves what an old fogey I am.

  • What a fun party you gave!….I agree that celebrating Mardi Gras is bitter sweet considering how New Orleans still looks and that many people still aren’t “home”.

  • wow I laughed looking at those pictures then I read the last paragraph and wanted cry. Looks like y’all had fun.

  • I linked a song to my site from my son’s college group. You liked the one I linked before, so check this one out!  ; )

  • hey, i know all those people!

  • what a fun party.. thanks for sharing!

  • Your party looks fun!  Can I come to the next one?  I miss having parties and going to parties, even the ones without alcohol…..

You’re right…your wife IS really pretty.  And I’m sure that the pictures don’t even begin to do her justice.  Good thing that you answered that IM so long ago….

  • Looks like great fun, and you still have the chance to do it again on Fat Tuesday, party party party…real New Orleans syle!

One of my co-workers lived, up to Katrina in NO and  she and her husband went back last weekend. She said it still has a war torn look with piles of trash on the sides of the road and in the median. Houses with windows all broken out about to collapse, and cars piled on top of each other under the interstate overpass like some post-apocalyptic film. Housing prices have skyrocketed so that her former colleagues were back living with parents or communting from Baton Rouge. She said she commented that things needed to be cleaned up and their response was, it HAS been cleaned up. Sounds like it will take a very long time for NO to come back.

  • What a fun party!  I try every year to get the baby!!!  ;-(

  • You had a party and forgot to invite me? Im crused.
Just the same, that would have been one loooong drive home at midnight.
