  • Don’t worry, be happy

    DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY

As my toes dangle precariously over the chasm of senility, incontinence, and prostate exams which is my 50th birthday, I have begun to reflect on my life. Specifically, I have been thinking lately about the things that made me happy as a younger man verses the things that make me happy as I approach the half-century mark. Let’s compare:

Things that made me happy when I was a 25 year old man:

    1.         The pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.

    2.         The study of theology and Man’s desire to connect to a higher power.

    3.         Existential philosophy and contemplating our place in the universe.

    4.         Seeking justice and attempting to eradicate inequality wherever I encountered it.

    5.         Struggling to be a role model and a positive influence in the lives of those around me.

Things that make me happy as a 50 year old man:

    1.         A really good bowel movement.

What can I say? I’m a much less complicated person that I used to be.

  • something to ponder, for sure
    happy bday

  • I don’t know…a good movement can get complicated at that age….or so I am told

  • OH I hope you have a very Happy Birthday.

  • Do you feel like you’ve had an epiphany? A good bowel movement could cause that.

  • As an added bonus, you can be happy that you’re not wearing adult diapers, yet.  Unless of course you are, in which case, you can be happy you’re not the person who gets paid to change you, yet.

  • I hope 1-5 still make you happy   Enjoy the final days of 49… and then REALLY enjoy being a half century old

  • My first instinct here is to heartily LOL!  But, being a mere 3 years from my own impending senility, incontinence, but not prostate exams, perhaps I should have a good cry, instead!  Twenty-five short years from youth to the abyss of aging!  :-p

    Happy Big 5-0, Mark!

Oh, btw, I think one of the first signs of senility is forgetting to comment when you visit your Xanga friends.  Now, don’t go forgetting your password, either!

  • hylarious, I’m 26 and I can’t wait to be less complicated than now lol

  • How about sleeping straight through an entire night without once getting up to go to the bathroom? I am dreaming that that day may come again… Ha ha!

  • “if i get old, i will not give in, but if i do, remind me of this: remind me that once i was free, once i was cool, once i was me; and if i sit down and cross my arms, hold me into this song – knock me out, smash out my brains if i take a chair and start to talk shit.”

it’s kind of depressing that the natural cycle of life kills off youthful zeal and replaces it with bowel movements, contentedness and conservativism. that isn’t a pop at you at all. in fact, it’s quite the opposite. i guess i am just terrified that i’ll become the smug old man that answers my every probing anxiety with a shrug and a pat on the back. i want to reach forty, fifty, sixty, ninety, and still be able to tell the young people that death really is a horrible prospect, that they’re right to think that only a deluded man could let life turn into a routine, that nobody sane welcomes permanent the looming spectre of permanent inexistence as a reprieve or a well-earned rest. sorry, major tangent, you’re not old, and you didn’t mention death once. i’m ranting. about nothing in particular. i apologise.

  • What, your loyal blog readers don’t make you happy?
Birthdays are awesome, I hope you don’t get socks or a coffee mug.

  • And doubtless the creator, who designed us thusly, looks on with satisfaction.

But I suspect there’s more left to you than just enjoying a, well, you know.

  • If that’s all it takes to make you happy, I can recommend some really effective stuff.  I’m sure my buddy Rodney could set you up. *winks*

  • NOT that there’s anything wrong with that, mind you. It just pays to simplify.

    Happy Prostate Exam, my friend!

  • This reminded me of my FiL (whom I adore) and I had to laugh. ~ L

  • LOL  You reached this stage of your life at a younger age than most.  I’m still not sure which day it is, so whenever HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  • A really good bowel movement would make me happy too…does that say anything about me?! I’m only 20!!

  • Bloody hell TMI lol happy birthday :)

  • RYC:  Ahahahaha!  I think you need to add a few zeroes to that offer!  :-p
