AT LAST! A GROUP OF EVANGELICALS THAT DON’T LOOK LIKE TOTAL WHACK JOBS!
If pressed, I would have to categorize myself as an evangelical. Although in today’s climate, that’s about as embarrassing as wearing a sign around your neck that says I have Herpes AND genital warts. As someone who roughly comes in under this heading (evangelical, not genital warts) I’ve been very dismayed over the last several years that evangelicals tend to be represented in the media by nut cases like Pat “WWJA” (who would Jesus assassinate) Robertson and Jerry “gays caused 9/11” Falwell.
This is why I was delighted by a Reuters article today which reported that a group of 85 evangelical Christian leaders (Including mega-church pastors, Christian college presidents, and religious broadcasters) have banned together to back legislation aimed at combating global warming; legislation that the White House strongly opposes. This group includes Rick Warren, a man for whom I have a great deal of respect.
Hey Georgie? Can you hear your base beginning to splinter? I can!
In fact, they are running a full page ad today in the New York Times which will be followed by a series of national television ads.
I’m positively giddy with excitement.
The fact that we are pretty much the only industrialized country in the world that has not yet signed the Kyoto Protocol is a national embarrassment, and the assertion by President Bush that global warming could simply be a myth doesn’t exactly put him in the front rows of the science class.
Many evangelicals would tell you that they believe the Genesis creation story to be a literal account. Well, if that is their position, then they can’t deny the validity of Genesis 2:15 “Then the Lord God took man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and care for it.” (NLV)
All I can say is that when it comes to “caring for it”, it’s about friggin time. Mr. Warren, I’m proud of you…keep up the good fight.

AMEN! The Kyoto Protocals are rather weak, really, but it’s a signal that the Big Bad U.S. is willing to do something about the evironment that we typically so callously use up. I’m glad that a group is stepping up to support the legislation.
Is it backed by Sydney Wade at the GDC?
******CRRRRRRAAAAAAACK*********
(base splintering)
Very exciting!
Yeah for pastor Rick!…he is my sister’s pastor, she has been a member at that church since it originated out of Ricks garage, then a strip mall, followed by a big old circus tent, and now it’s present setting, which, by the way, is not opulent, but down right humble!…I love men like Rick, our old paster, Chuck Swindoll, was the same, amazingly bright but humble warriors for the Lord….I too am proud of him for “bucking” the rightest establishment that have been “licking” Georgie’s boots for much too long….
Along those lines, I must say that I nearly jumped up and did a victory dance this past Sunday when one of the men in our Sunday school class (which is much too conservative for it’s own good), prayed that the Lord give us the courage and wisdom not to follow a leader just because he professes to be a “christian”, but to step back and study his actions and see if what he ”does” are actually within the teachings of our Lord!….I didn’t jump up (we were after all praying) but I did a happy dance in my chair, only my husband took notice and gigled for a little while!
i am barbra baby!
That is wonderful. I am so tired of the attitude that “Jesus would vote Republican”, I don’t know when they took took Him hostage. I actually had a student look at me in horror when he found out I voted for Gore and say, “Aren’t you a Christian?” I couldn’t even go there.
Oh this IS good news! Remember when I commented Jesus was the Original Liberal? How I love fruition…. WWJA….I nearly fell outta my chair.
xoxoxo
I love Rick Warren… He is a great man.
Good stuff. Speaking of Robertson, one of my Xanga friends was wondering what he’d have to say about the Egyptian ship sinking. I’m sure he thinks that was God’s punishment for Egypt being so. . . .Egyptian.
I’m not entirely sold on the Kyoto Protocols. But it is nice to see a group of religious folks get together on environmental concerns. In retrospect, I wonder why that hasn’t really happened before.
I hadnt heard of this, IM gonna have to tell Mark so he can check it out and tell me what I think.
You have a way of putting things that takes some of the sting out of your words. A nice talent. I remember the ads in the seventies of the proud Indian (non PC person that I am) with the tear on his face because of the pollution in this nation. The media made a major oops when they made the one with him smiling as things were cleaned up because the guilt stopped and the process reversed itself again. We have a duty to this earth we live on and a duty to each other. Many fail. A few make it. I hope this group doesn’t become the new “moral majority” so that they lose the ability to press the issue. Kudos to anyone who fights to clean up and conserve.
The Brittany comment….classic!
The auto story. Nice acceleration. LOL. Shame how each generation has to find a new means of insulting their elders to feel good about themselves. Criticize them…you better be prepared to have the world pounding down your door and eliminating your rights. I probably would have gone just fast enough for them to think they could catch me, and then accelerate and peel out. Of course, I probably wouldn’t visit that location again, just in case, it’s a regular hang out area. That was indeed a golden moment.
I am thrilled to hear that there is a crack in Georgies alliance. He is the most arrogant man I have ever met. And he hides it behind a Texas drawl and a “ah shucks” demeanor
Here’s my opinion on global warming! It can get quite confusing, and it might seem like I’m doing a “Kerry”. Just bare with me as I go along.
I think whats happened lately has very little to do with global warming, and more to do with mother nature doing her thing! I find it amazing that everyone seems to think the weather should be the exact same every single year, and anything different is the end of the world! It just seems to me that we are so quick to jump to conclusions based on very little and sketchy evidence. We’ve only been keeping data on weather for what? 150 years? How do we know that 5,000 years ago this exact same thing didn’t happen?! Now, I’ll believe this weather has to totally do with global warming when we find some cavemans records on how dinosaurs increase in fiber intake over the last several decades has contributed to wacky weather patterns!
Now, notice I didn’t say Global Warming doesn’t exist! Only a moron *cough*Bush*cough* would think otherwise. At least we know he thinks it’s a myth. If Kerry was in office then one week it would be a myth and the next it isn’t. Face it… They’re BOTH idiots! There’s my political opinion 4 this term! Anyway, it’s sad that crazy weather has to be the cause in uniting together to better protect our planet! Why do we have to see tragity before we realize our own stupidity? If we have to believe this weather is caused by global warming before we take action against pollution then so be it!
