  • QUICK HEALTH UPDATE

As of this morning (according the folks at LA Weight Loss), I have officially dropped ten pounds (only 28 more to go!) I’m back on my meds and my blood pressure has been at or below 120/80 for the last two weeks.  I can’t begin to describe how much better I feel. I’m still headed in for a treadmill test in a couple of weeks to make sure there is no heart disease, but I haven’t had any chest pain lately.

My mother in law is only 71. Trust me, at my age, 71 doesn’t seem that old. She has had a minor stroke, is diabetic, and is overweight. We love to take her to dinner and movies with us, but when she goes, it takes her ten minutes just to get in and out of the car. Conversely, there is a guy at church named John that I would swear is in his mid sixties. He is trim and fit and acts like a teenager. He told me the other day that he is 84. My jaw hit the floor.

I’m determined that I’m going to be more like John than my mother in law. What fun would it be to get older and reach retirement if you’re not healthy enough to enjoy it?

I’m afraid that I’m slowly becoming something that I used to despise: a health zealot (don’t worry Jordan; I’m not going to start shopping at Akins). It has simply amazed me at what dropping ten pounds and getting my blood pressure under control has done for how I feel.

Besides…I want to look damn good driving that car.

  • La la la I can’t heeeear you! La la la (brushing potato chip crumbs off my shirt… turning up volume on TV)

  • How dare you beat me to the Akins joke?!

    Proud of ya!

  • Good for you! Keep up the good work!

  • I am the unhealthiest, healthnut I know…welcome to my world.

  • i’ve told the husband a million times that i don’t want to get old in age unless i’m young in body.  of course, i’ll be pushing hereditary.  nothing in my gene pool indicates a healthy old age.  so if i am, i finally have that proof i needed that i’m adopted.

  • Good for you Mark.  Now after fiddle-farting around, it needs to be my turn…

  • Hooray for you!  I’m suffering with an extra 25 lbs.  I know I could breathe better if I could get it off.  My problem is that I can’t exercise because of my extreme shortness of breath.  I wish I could make young people understand how important good health is.  I didn’t listen when I was young either.  A lot of it’s in your genes though and my family isn’t one with longevity.  Keep up the good work.

  • Well, the older and more seasoned one becomes, the more one realizes life is but a state of mind. There is something to be said about the Mind, Body, Spirit connection. Dance with it~or drive in that new car, as the case may be

    Blessings~Be Very Well~

  • Yay!  Awesome job! I think the rush of seeing results on the scale and feeling better drives one to ‘health nuttery.’  I’ve lost seventeen pounds on weight watchers since september, and my next goal is fitting the five fruits and veggies into every day (harder than I thought!)

  • Good for you!…Amazing what staying on your meds will do for you!…Well, it is amazing to me as a nurse, that patients don’t stay on them! LOL

Congrats on the 10 lb thing, and stay on your meds…I know that guys have a much harder time staying on BP meds for some…um…”intimate” reasons, but you can discuss that with your Doc, there is a way around that…

    Good luck to you.

  • That’s the spirit. I’m determined to stay young as long as possible. I’m playing tennis tonight. I keep that part of my workout going all year.

It’s really scary to think of being that feeble at 71. My husband’s grandfather lived to 95 and he worked out everyday. He was young in mind, spirit and body until he just dropped over from a stroke. I think that’s the way to go!

  • Congrats Mark!!!! Whoo hoo! You can do it almost 1/3 of the way there!! Keep on!!!!

RYC: Fargo… you know what? I never saw the movie. I been asked before those similar questions and I always say the same thing. Never seen it, do not want to and I dont like Fargo! ::laughs:: Its too busy for me. I live a bit less than an hour and a half away from there. So sorry, I cannot help you. Perhaps one day I will go rent it and then I can tell you if its true or not. Until then? Its just cold, plain cold up here right now. 9 degrees at 7:50pm with a 0 degree windchill. A tiny bit warmer than it was this morning. Our high today? 17.

  • Wow!!  I can’t believe you’ve done so well….and your blood pressure is great!

So how faithful are you on this new diet?  Is it that strict or can you kinda just add it to your life gradually?  I’m scared of dieting…I always cheat.

Keep us posted on the tradmill test.  Now you have me thinking.  hmmm 10 pounds leads to 10 more…to 10 more…etc.

Oh check out Ian’s  Xanga site.  I talked him into blogging before he deploys to Japan.

  • Good for you!  Keep up the good work.

  • Woohoo, congrats!  I’m especially glad to hear that your blood pressure is under control.

  • What IS LA Weight Loss? What do they do there? I get coupons from them in the mail, but they give me no clue about what goes on. Secret, arcane rituals? Injections of magical fat burning ju ju juice? What?

  • I have a feeling you’re going to beat me in the 20lb race. I’m rethinking my Christmas goal as I’ve only lost about 4lbs. Aiming for the 10% of the weight loss now.
