  • EDIT: I joined LA Weight Loss on Saturday, and I officially start the program today. I currently weigh 188 lbs and the goal weight is 150. According the program, I’m supposed to lose 2 lbs a week for 19 weeks, putting me at my goal by the middle of March. I also have an appointment in the morning with my doctor to get back on my meds. The race has begun.

By the way, my doctor is a woman. I know this is probably sexist, but I prefer women doctors because they typically seem smarter, more focused, and less prone to be dismissive. The only issue I have with having a woman doctor is when it comes time for the inevitable prostate exam. The last time I had this done, my doctor actually said “OK..now we get to see some skin!”  I’m not sure about this, but I think that under some circumstances that could be considered sexual harrasment. Although in this case, she was laughing hysterically when she said it, so it was more a blow to my self esteem. To add insult to injury, she couldn’t be in the room alone with me when she did this, so she invited a female nurse into the room to be part of the festivities. And people wonder why I don’t like to go to the doctor.

“…a heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack-ack, I oughta know by now.”

I recently sat down at one of those “self-check” blood pressure machines at a local Walgreen’s drug store. I put my arm in the little cuff and pushed the button for the test to start. The machine grunted along for a few minutes and then produced an error code and told me to continue to sit still. Suddenly a flashing red light and a siren went off in the store. All the lights went out and team of paramedics descended on rappelling ropes out of the ceiling and surrounded me with defibrillators and syringes full of adrenaline. Apparently, when your blood pressure is over a certain point it signals this team, like a silent alarm at a bank, because the machine is convinced you are currently in the throes of a heart attack.

Ok, I made up the thing about the paramedics, but my blood pressure was shockingly high. I’ve been on and off medication for a year or so; with little result (the issue being that I’m off the medication more than I’m on it).  The blood pressure reading kind of scared me, though. My cholesterol is also off the charts, and both my parents died very young from heart attacks. I’ve been having some chest pain lately that I’ve told myself is indigestion, but I know that’s not true.

I can’t imagine why I’m in this shape, though. I adhere to a strict exercise regimen of sitting at my computer, then sitting on an airplane, then sitting in a rental car, and then coming back to a hotel and sitting in front of my computer again. My diet consists of the finest airport and convenience store foods and I’ve been told that a steady influx of Cinnabons and Starbucks coffee will kill any bug in your system.

I do feel it’s time to do something about my health. I’m much too young and beautiful to die. My wife joined LA Weight Loss about five weeks ago and has already lost 20 pounds. She looks fabulous. So…I’m joining with her tomorrow and I’m starting an exercise routine. I’m going to implement this routine in the home gym I spent lots of money to set up a couple of years ago and which has been serving only as a great place to hang clothes that I’ve become too fat to wear.

Have you ever noticed those “before and after” photos in weight loss or exercise magazines?  The “before” pictures always show people with pasty white complexions looking like they just came through an interrogation at Guantanamo Bay. In the “after” pictures the people are not only thinner; but they are smilling, tanned, have perfect teeth, and are sitting in $100,000.00 sports cars. I’ve got to find out what in the water at those gyms they are advertising.

I thought I would go ahead and post my own before and after pictures.

    Here I am now:

Here is where I hope to be three months from now:

    Wish me luck.

  • Hahaha…good pictures!  Good Luck.

  • Good luck, Dad. Listen to your wife this time and stick with it.

Hey, maybe take your meds too?

We, the loyal readers, demand health updates. Honest ones. :)

  • Love the pics! We want you to post a real ‘after’ picture of yourself when you do get into that Speedo! LOL!

Seriously though, my cholesterol was a little off last year. The good was too low, the bad was too high. I was already watching my diet, and walking 4-5 times a week. I tried something that the doctor told my husband. Check with your doctor first, if you are already on prescribed meds, but I take a niacin tablet every day. Make sure it is the time-released. It is in the vitamin aisle. It lowered my total number by 30 points!

    Good luck!

  • Holy Cow, your cracking me up. For sure lets us know what goes on in those LA Weight Loss places….us WW people wouldnt mind seeing how the two programs differ.

  • Please! Please! Please! Have you not read my blogs that I post over and over about my 37 year of age heart attack? Please do not ignore the signs and symptoms – stop making excuses and see a doctor! I was beyond shocked when I read an article in my Cardiologists office that said over 75% of all heart attacks were preventable….meaning in the study they done, 75% of the heart attack patients just did not try to keep themselves heart healthy – and they ignored the little warning signs that you sometimes have. I am sorry to rant on in your comment section but I am so very passionate about this. Many times heart attacks and heart disease is something we do to ourselves due to lousy eating, little exercise and not having physical check ups.

  • Mark…if you can go to college and graduate with honors under the circumstances you wrote about you know you have the self-love and self discipline to do this. So do it..its the nicest thing you can ever give your wife..and as per your request..good luck..though you don’t need it you have you…..Mia Lucia

  • Exer-what now?  I’m pretty sure I’ve heard the word, but I’m not really familiar with it…

  • Don’t mess around. I had a cousin who had something at 38, and because he caught it early, he’s fine and hitting 50. Get it checked out, and get back on your meds. Please.

  • Haha nice after picture. I would feel a little insecure by a man that had bigger boobs than me though.

  • Can’t wait to see the after pics!

And your son makes a good point. TAKE YOUR MEDS!

  • Both equally handsome! lol….But seriously, what are you thinking on the BP med thing?  I’m always amazed when my patients insist that their meds didn’t help them at all, and then when I check their Rx I find that they haven’t refilled it in 3 months!  Well, yeah, it doesn’t help jack if you DON”T take it!…But then again, these words come from a NURSE who had her last mamogram 3 years ago regardless of the fact that 6 of my fathers 8 sisters have died of breast cancer…but hey, do as I say, not as I do! OK?!

  • Great post! loved the pics!! Your wife is doing awesome. 20 lbs. in 5 weeks! My exercise room here at home is where I hang my laundry, so I really got tickled with what you said.  I take diovan for my bp, have been on it for about 4 yrs. now & it stays perfect, but I’m afraid it is a lifetime commitment.  Best of luck to you.

  • Ha Ha, good luck, oh you are really hot, well  you will be, as for now, umm yeah.

  • This exercise and healthy eating thing is really catching on.  It’s almost cult-like.  I must resist.

  • Yeah… this might just spark me to do something about my own eating habits.  I take my blood pressure meds religiously, but I don’t always eat right…  and I need to really start thinking about it… I’m getting older!

  • Coming from one who has dealt with blood pressure problems – get thee to thy local health food store – magnesium. Males need 400 mg a day – and it really helps with the bp.

  • RYC: Yes, I’m an AV person…  I’m the Coordinator for Media Ministries at my church.  On the video end, I shoot and edit videos for our church.  This ranges from simple ministry videos to full worship services for broadcast.  I work with an Avid Express Pro HD system… am still learning the ins and outs of the system, but WOW!  We videotape for broadcast every week, and I do weddings and baptisms as well as other projects within the church… consecration videos, campaign videos, etc.  It’s a very large church, so there’s always something that needs to video!  Always doing something fun!

  • i gotta do that whole taking care of myself too. fun.

  • ryc:  That pic was from Ye Olde Smoking Days.  Back then I had a fast metabolism, low cholesterol, and really, really low blood pressure.  These days, I tend to wonder which part of all that was so unhealthy.  Other than the inability to breathe.

In all seriousness, I wish you the very best with the lifestyle changes.  T’aint easy.  I keep staring at my treadmill, but so far, no major epiphany.  Maybe once I convince myself that using it will mean I don’t have to dust it…

  • Wishing you the hunkiest of bodies within a very short time Now, I should get off of my tush.

We’re taking votes on next week’s topics, by the way. Which topic would you have us discuss?

  • Just read an article this morning about how high fructose corn syrup in soda is one cause of the obesity epidemic. I remember your fondness for Mountain Dew mentioned in an earlier post….is it diet or high test? Might be a place to start…..Good luck! The best diet I was ever on was the Marlboro and Maxwell House diet.

I find myself looking at the “before” pictures and thinking “They don’t look too bad….” but YOUR before picture posted is the exception.  haha!

  • Thanks to everyone that encourages Mark to take his meds and don’t ignore those signs.  I’ve been trying to gently nudge (not nag, mind you) that I’d like to have him around a lot longer!!! I think he’s a hunk in the before and after!!!

  • Take the meds, listen to the doc, and enjoy the program with your wife. We can’t wait to see the healthier you.

Do you really own a Speedo???

  • You’ll need a bra

  • Hmmm. . .isn’t that Billy Joel singing?

I have faith in your ability to transform yourself. . .I wish I could say the same for my middle aged self.  Good luck!

  • Do stay on your meds! And I wish you the best of luck in getting back in shape! I love your tongue in cheek humor that instills your writing. Stay healthy Mark! RYC: Thank you! Hope you had a great weekend!

    ~Namaste, T.L.

  • RYC: I know your a married man but I am passing you an e-hug anyway! ::hugs:: Thank you for what you said this morning. It really got under my skin what I saw from that link. I know I should not have let it and then posted a rant on it but you know what? If more people were not afraid to speak their minds, color outside the lines of the box… who knows. You take care of you and yours! ~Namaste, T.L.

  • Love the pics! Hahahaha

  • Now you know what us women get to go through with male gynos…

  • As a nurse, I would have been really tempted to join that doctor in the room with you wearing my “leathers” as I ordered you to bend over the exam table….

But then again, we do want you to go to the doctor! LOL

  • RYC: My apologies for being remiss. You’re right, I’ve been very busy with real life. As you may remember from your parenting-young-children days, the weekend before Halloween is packed full ‘o festivities. (Does that count as real life?) Fortunately, my brother is taking up the slack. See Bad_Dogma for incisive commentary on the Alito nomination.

  • LOL .. sheesh – I think we were twins seperated at birth because damn it, your before pic looks an awfully like mine does – —– good luck! stay strong!!!

  • OMG…The Edit!  Women Doctors!!! Have they no shame????  yup…GO GIRLS!!!

  • She really said that?  LMAO!  I’m more like jaba myself….ack!!  I avoid mirrors.
