  • YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANCING

(I want to dance the night away)

My wife and I have decided to take up ballroom dancing and we had our first lesson tonight along with another couple. It was a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to the next lesson.

The instructor was much younger than I was expecting. He explained that when he was nine he became interested in dance because of the new “break-dancing” craze. I thought, gosh, when break-dancing was a new craze I used to run over kids doing it with my walker.

He also didn’t seem to have much of a sense of humor. At one point he said “just keep it up and pretty soon you’ll feel just like Fred and Ginger.” I replied, “That’s good to hear because at the moment I feel more like Fred and Barney.” He stared at me with a puzzled look for a moment and then with a slightly forced smile said “Oh…Fred and Barney, I get it.”  Ok, I’ll admit it wasn’t a side-splitter but I thought it at least warranted a chuckle.

We ask him the obvious question; “Where does one go to ballroom dance in Tulsa, Oklahoma?” He replied that there was a dance at the Elks Lodge every Friday evening. Wow, I can see it now; my wife and can slip on our orthopedic shoes and our trusty Depends and go hang out at the Elks lodge. If we’re really lucky, maybe they’ll have a mixer with the folks from the VFW! I’m holding out for a slightly younger crowd.

I’ve never felt like I was a particularly graceful person so I’m hoping this will help. After I finish the first six lessons, everyone is invited to Tulsa to watch us dance. Just look for me, I’ll be the guy at the Elks Lodge doing the tango with a rose in my mouth and putting Geritol in the punch bowl.

  • That sounds like fun. I used to live in Tulsa… now I’m happy. LOL

    BE blessed!
    Steve

  • I begged Tim for us to take ballroom dancing….ever since I saw that movie “Shall We Dance”. Nothing doing.

  • Actually, Fred was quite graceful!  If you were a cartoon geek, you’d know  his bowling league nickname was “Twinkle Toes!”

    Yabba Dabba Do!

  • Or you could have told him that you’d prefer not to feel like Fred & Ginger, since they’re dead.  Wait.  They are dead, aren’t they ?

I’ve seen those ballroom dancing competitions on TV.  I expect you’ll be letting us all know when you’ll be on.  I’ll buy blank tapes for that.  Especially if the Elks make you wear funny hats.  Like the Grand Order of the Water Buffalo.  Oh.  We’re back to the Fred and Barney reference.  How cosmic.

  • This reminds me of that movie “Shall We Dance” . That’s really neat that you guys are doing that, but surely you can find somewhere…anywhere to dance besides the Elks Club! lol…

  • I did not think of Shall We Dance. I thought of ON GOLDEN POND. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0082846/

  • Elks?  Elks?  Is there really an Elks club?  Ok, there’s one here too, but I would never GO there.  But then, I can’t dance.

  • LMAO…Fred and Barney.. I’d have had hysterics at that line.  I still remember the episode where they are practicing their dance to surprise the girls and Wilma gets jealous.  Almost wrecks the whole thing.

We have a place called The Tapestry Club that plays music for ballroom dancing every Thursday night.  Age 18 and up are welcome.  It’s a lot of fun.  Had one guy trying to teach me to swing dance.  I tried not to step on his toes.

My brother John took lessons with my mother the summer before he left for the Naval Academy.  He wound up being very popular at the dances there.

    Kudos for you all.  Enjoy!

  • Hey! Saw you on “Content worth featuring”…and I totally agree with you! YES, there are us 40′s and up that are on xanga that have very insightful things to say….I like to think that we can all learn from each other! Take Care, Sharon

  • I think it’s great that you and your wife are doing the dance thing together. That is really nice. I wish we could do something like that. I have always thought I would like to try the swing dancing, of course, I would have to be the one throwing HIM up in the air! lol  I know EXACTLY what you mean about the Elks lodge. My dad passed away a few years ago and he belonged to the Moose lodge! lol He played music there alot and I definitely got to learn some “older” songs like “cabdriver” and “a white sports coat and a pink carnation”. lol

  • And there’s my husband, who never ceases to amaze me how he can trick nurses for each of his thirteen knee surgeries over the years to give him the right answer by asking “Do you think I’ll be able to dance after this surgery?”  Mister Two Left Feet, stand on the dance floor and look like you’re having a seizure?  Yeah, right.

  • Please tell me you’ll be wearing spandex pants and a bolero jacket with patent leather shoes….

Seriously, I think it’s wonderful that you are learning to dance together. I think it’s beautiful to see a couple in step together instead of just doing the “circle shuffle” generic slow dance we all do. Your wife is a lucky woman.

  • Good Luck with the Ball Room Dance Lessons! I’m learning Belly Dance and have done some Line Dancing. My husband will only do the Texas Two Step with me, Someday I’ll get him in for lessons!

                                       Mary

  • LOL – things you think you will never do when you are young – just feel natural when you are old – LOL

  • Hill??  What hill??

    xoxoxo

  • LMAO! I think any dance instructor without a sense of humor should have to go to the Elks club and dance

Well, there may not be places there to dance, but think of the fun you’ll have on vacations, and cruises, etc!   If all else fails, you can be the activities director in the nursing home….

  • Considering the alchohol content of Geritol, you might really get that party goin’!

  • Shoulda taken up line dancing….even better…CLOGGING

  • Where are you taking lessons?  I’ve been looking for a place since I moved back.  I did ballroom dancing when I was 10 and even did some competitions.  I love it!  LOL at the Fred and Barney comment!
